What Are Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin porcelain shells designed to enhance the color and appearance of your teeth. They are carefully molded to attach to the front surface of a damaged or discolored tooth. It is common to find yourself with stained teeth from the long-term effects of things like coffee, wine, and smoking. Veneers can help fix that for you!

Veneers are typically made of porcelain or resin composite materials and are a fix to the cosmetic appearance. Dental veneers can help improve the overall appearance of the teeth and create an even, symmetrical, pearly white smile!

Veneer Eligibility: Who Can Get Them

Any adult over the age of 18 can make the decision if they are qualified by a dentist and desire veneers over other treatments! Many dentists will require the patient to have good oral hygiene and attend regular dental visits. You may not be eligible for dental veneers if you have a bad habit of grinding your teeth when you sleep. Veneers are made out of porcelain, but intense teeth grinding can splinter or even break the veneer off. Your natural teeth need to have enough natural tooth matter/enamel. A small layer of enamel will be removed to create a strong bonding surface for the veneer.

It is important to keep in mind that this is a permanent procedure, so be sure you are wanting to change the look of your teeth permanently. This is an irreversible procedure. If you do not think you are eligible for veneers, there are other procedures you may be able to partake in!

When You Should Get Veneers

Dental veneers are used to reach a number of results. These include:

  • Changing the shape of your teeth
  • Changing the color of your teeth (whitening)
  • Repair chipped teeth
  • Improve alignment (straighten teeth)
  • Protect teeth from sensitivity

No matter what the reason, veneers will make you feel comfortable about showing off your smile again! You should speak to your dentist about the possibility of getting dental veneers if you feel you have healthy teeth and minor issues listed above.

Where to Get Veneers

Cosmetic Dentistry Grants (CDG) will help you find a cosmetic dentist in your area that participates in the CDG program, allowing you to get financial assistance toward your veneer procedure.

Benefits of Veneers

There are endless benefits to veneers! Whether you are deciding on a veneer or a set for your front teeth, your confidence will be limitless after this procedure. Some of the most common benefits of dental veneers are:

  • To cosmetically repair teeth
  • To get a more natural-looking smile that is aesthetically pleasing
  • Minimally invasive procedure
  • Results are immediately visible
  • Aftercare and maintenance of veneers is simple
  • Permanent

How Veneers Are Done: What Is the Procedure?

Your dentist may need to start by taking X-rays in order to evaluate your teeth’s health. If your teeth are deemed healthy enough for veneers, the next step may involve shaving down parts of the enamel on the teeth that will ultimately have veneers placed on them. An impression is then taken of your prepared teeth and sent to a lab to create and personalize your very own veneers!

The veneers typically take about a week or two to get sent back to your dentist’s office. Once your dentist lets you know your veneers are in, you can schedule an appointment to have them placed. The dentist will prep your teeth, try them in, get your approval, and then permanently cement them in your mouth.

After the cement sets, you will be ready to go show the world your brand new smile!

How Much Are Veneers?

You can expect traditional porcelain dental veneers to cost you each tooth anywhere from $900-$2,500 depending on the difficulty of the case and will typically last anywhere from about 10-15 years if taken care of properly. No-prep veneers or lumineers can cost anywhere from $800-$2,000 per tooth and typically last about 5-7 years if taken care of properly.

How the Cosmetic Dentistry Grants Can Help You Get Veneers

Types of Veneers

Porcelain Veneers: The traditional and most commonly used veneers, porcelain veneers usually last for 20 years or more. Porcelain is very strong and resistant to stains while also mimicking the look of natural teeth. This process consists of thin pieces of porcelain being applied to your teeth to reinstate their natural, white look.

Composite Veneers: A more affordable and less destructive way to improve your smile, composite veneers can be applied in one dentist visit. This type of veneer is usually made out of plastic or resin, meaning they will not last as long as porcelain veneers. You can expect your composite veneers to last up to seven years, but there is an increased chance they may break or stain.

Palatal Veneers: This type of veneer is placed on the inside part of your teeth, rather than the outside. Palatal dental veneers protect the back of worn down, eroded, delicate or sensitive teeth to prevent further wear and keep them strong.

Risks of Getting Veneers

Although the risks of getting dental veneers are very slim, it is possible you may experience:

Increased Tooth Sensitivity: The biggest risk, tooth sensitivity, can happen due to the removal of the enamel. This typically will only last up to a week after the procedure. If sensitivity lasts for more than 3 months, this could mean there is an underlying problem.

Dental Damage: This procedure sometimes involves removing enamel, in which case there is a small chance for dental damage. If a veneer does not fit properly, this can alter the placement of your teeth which can eventually lead to pain while eating, jaw pain, and bruxism.

Veneers: FAQ

We are asked many questions about dental veneers procedures, so we’ve answered some of the most common questions below:

Do Veneers Ruin Your Teeth?

Aside from the fact that you may have to have some enamel removed from your teeth, porcelain veneers don’t damage them. Veneers are added around teeth to give them strength. Veneers are irreversible and affect the appearance of your teeth. Good regular hygiene will help to keep your natural teeth and veneers stable.

How Long Do Gums Take to Heal After Veneers?

The time it takes for your gums and other parts of your mouth to heal after your veneer procedure will differ from person to person. Dentists say that the average time, however, is typically no more than 2 weeks for the mouth to feel normal and chewing and speaking to feel natural.

Do Veneers Stop Tooth Decay?

No. If you are having a problem with tooth decay, you will want to go see a dentist right away for proper treatment. After this problem gets taken care of, you may then proceed to get your veneers fitted.

Do Veneers Make Your Breath Smell?

If the veneers are placed correctly, and there aren’t any issues after, they will not cause bad breath. If they are not fitted correctly, food particles and bacteria can get stuck and cause breath to smell.

From Our Recipients

Due to a serendipitous google search for something unrelated I learned about this opportunity and like a dream come true I will have something that I have wanted repaired for years, repaired. It began when I was 7 or 8, I had fallen on my face and my baby tooth was thrusted into my bone pushing my adult tooth up. Over the years of dental surgery and braces they were able to bring the tooth down but I had a lot of other issues that occured and things were never quite right and I did not have the money to repair it. But now I am and feel thankful and very happy. Thank you for your kind help. This will change my life for the better. Thank you.

Thomas Ryder - Elizabeth, NJ

I am very thankful to have been selected for the cosmetic dentistry grant and to Smile Select for helping me to achieve having a perfect smile. For about 8 years now I have grown up with braces on my teeth up until I needed my baby teeth removed, in which once tooth came down successfully and the other did not. Within time there was no progression and I was finally able to have options in getting my tooth back. Which did not feel possible at first. Luckily I overheard on the radio about the Cosmetic Dentistry Grants program and I have never felt so grateful to have been selected for this opportunity. I finally feel I am able to have a choice in getting the full smile I have dreamed of having. Thank you once again for making this possible for me.
